5. Has art become just a new, inventive form of product placement due to rampant capitalism?

The marketplace is an unavoidable aspect of human life, and m[u]st be dealt with without idealization. Jesus matter-of-factly said "Render to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's". All the Old Masters were professionals who delivered what their buyers demanded for a good price. The game didn't change, it just became more aggressive and conspicuous. It's an old image that genius is a small light in the dark serving as a beacon for akin souls, and that also didn't change. Gold has always been more scarce than dirt, and so it's only natural that a large part of the art market runs on shams, scams and marketing spam. But the smaller and truer part will hang in there time enough to carry the fire to the next generations. As Emerson puts it somewhere: "the Sun shines to-day also".
